This exciting project incorporates and expands an existing traditional stone house with a new metal structure and a concrete flank wall that enhances privacy. The existing house was an example of a traditional stone makrynari, meaning a long narrow building. The design aimed to restore this building, provide additional spaces in the form of an extension, and adapt the house to its context of a busy road and surrounding businesses. A single concrete wall creates new indoor spaces, extending the house to provide additional bedrooms and larger living spaces. A new roof replaces the old one but sits on metal columns instead of the existing stonework. The stone was repaired and restored where necessary, to reveal its raw beauty. We created an internal courtyard that provides a private outdoor space. The bedrooms huddle around it and now have the opportunity for large windows that are protected from views from the outside.
